Echoing Raymond Williams’ ground-breaking assertion that ‘culture is ordinary’, this talk outlines the need to re-imagine the relationship between theatre and everyday life. Arguing that contemporary performance has witnessed a shift from ‘representational’ to ‘presentational’ practices, in which performers present themselves rather than represent someone else, Kear makes the case for rethinking the terms ‘acting’ and ‘performance’ and outlines how the new provision at UAL: Wimbledon plans to open up new approaches to performer training and widening participation.
